Jazz & Blues Show: Reviewing Kenny Burrell Tribute 6.20.18

Jazz & Blues at the Southfield Library

A Tribute, “Blues Notes – The Music of Kenny Burrell”

Wednesday, June 20, 2018

The purpose of the tribute series developed by Detroit Social Club is to inform/educate and entertain area music lovers by showcasing noteworthy musicians that famously have called the Detroit area their home.  Detroit has an unique legacy, as it has produced musicians that cover all genres of music, including classical, jazz, rock and roll, soul/Motown/R&B and blues.  Detroit Social Club celebrates these musicians and their contributions that have enhanced the musical reputation of Detroit nationally and internationally.

Another sizzling hot day in the city of Southfield!  But it was cool in the Southfield Public Library on Wednesday, June 20th as the Detroit Social Club Blues Band paid tribute to another great Detroit musician, the legendary guitarist, Kenny Burrell.  It was a very special night as we learned how much Mr. Burrell was loved and appreciated by so many people.  It was also special because his daughter, Jocelyn Burrell, got wind of our little event and graced us with her presence.  She thrilled the audience with word on his health and noted how honored he was by our tribute show.

Those that are familiar with productions produced by DSC know that this show will not only be entertaining but educational as well.  With so much material to draw from, the band focused on some of his earlier recordings which showcased not just some of his original recordings but a few selections inspired by his colleagues and mentors.

Kenny Burrell Biography           Kenny Burrell Show and Set List

Using portions of live interviews, that were originally posted on Youtube, the audience was exposed to Mr. Burrell in his own words preceding each set. The band, presenting itself as a trio consisting of guitar, bass, and drums, also used two vocalists to perform his  arrangements of originals and interpretations of classic jazz songs by the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Count Basie and his Orchestra and Billie Holiday.  The band also acknowledged, in the performance, a couple of his friends and mentors (Joe Fava, his personal guitar instructor; Muddy Waters, blues guitarist/singer; Wes Montgomery, jazz guitarist).

It was a musically challenging night as Detroit Social Club traveled across unfamiliar musical landscapes to interpret and perform his music in their unique way.  As Kenny would have wanted, we had to collectively “find our own voice”, as he would say, since there was no way we were going to sound exactly like Kenny.  To the enjoyment and satisfaction of the packed house of Kenny Burrell fans, we did it his way…our way!

“Another great show put on by the Detroit Social Club” – Don McGhee, Jazz & Blues Series, producer/photographer

The Performers

Arthur

“This was by far one of my biggest challenges as a guitar player!  To make it work I had to get inside his head and most importantly…his heart!” – Arthur Littsey, Guitarist, Detroit Social Club

Doc

“It was a real pleasure for me to do the Kenny Burrell tribute. I was introduced to so much great music that I never knew existed and to so many great songs that I didn’t know Kenny Burrell recorded. It was a great musical education for me and it was a lot of fun.” — Darnell “Doc” Gardner, Vocalist, Detroit Social Club

Joanne

“It was a joy to sing to sing these timeless melodies!  There’s a reason that they continue to be played/” – Joanne Newman, Vocalist, Detroit Social Club

“The Kenny Burrell show, for me, was a chance to do something I’ve always wanted to attempt to do…play some classical historical jazz music that I’ve always loved. It was a challenge and a very exciting one, allowing me to actually feel the music from a different aspect. It’s a sound that I plan on keeping in my repertoire as I move forward and it was an honor to be a part of it.  I hope you enjoyed it because I did enjoy playing it for you!”  — Christopher Kent, Bass, Detroit Social Club

Dave

“Growing up in my world in Detroit in the 60’s-70’s, I came up on the cultural diet of rock and R&B.  Jazz had a design sense that felt forced and crafted.  The radio didn’t play Bud Powell, it played the “smooth dry background stuff” with no real soul.  Miles and Monk set the standard for impulsive emotion, perfectly arranged with a priority of soul throughout it. Kenny Burrell, I came to discover, is the same way.  Creative music based on feel.  You can understand him, his beauty and his skill and neither overrides the other.  I’m happy I got closer to his music.” — Dave Henri, Drums, Detroit Social Club
